Food Chain Radio Michael Olson – Cheap Food Isn’t
About a thousand episodes of the Food Chain ago, I came to realize there were three things one can safely say about our food chain that always seem to ring true. And so I pulled out my literary license and turned them into Michael Olson’s Three Laws of the Food Chain.
The Third Law of the Food Chain is: Cheap Food Isn’t!
This law of the food chain stands in direct opposition to the promise of industrial agriculture, which is, we can eat cheap food and live a more leisurely life, which sounds like a pretty good deal.
But I believe food is made cheap by reducing or even eliminating its nutrient content, and by subsidizing its true cost of its production. Therefore, the cheap food we buy is really the expensive food we eat.
Here are two numbers that illustrate the point: Spending on food is down 6 to 7 percent. Spending on healthcare is up $4.9 trillion dollars. Eat cheap food, pay for it at the Doctor’s office.
But wait… We are now hearing of a new food ethic, one that is proclaiming “the end of Cheap food.” Can this be possible?

#2 The farther we go from the source of our food, the less control we have over what’s in that food.
