Homes of Hemp
Guests: Kathryn Mathewson, Secret Gardens Dot Com
&Dr. Trey Riddle and Adam Block, Sunstrands
I received an email from landscape designer, and former Food Chain guest, Kathryn Mathewson recently remarking at the fact that California is burning up, and that the state better wise up, and the way to do that is with homes made of hemp.
Well, why not? Just about everything has been made of hemp somewhere along the line. Way back when Henry Ford built a Model-T with hemp, and built it to run on hemp gasoline. Ford’s T, the “car grown from soil,” had hemp plastic panels whose impact strength was said to be 10 times stronger than steel. Time-worn film exists showing Henry himself swinging away at the “T” with an axe, without making a dent!
So, why not homes of hemp?
Kathryn was not just talking about wising up when she wrote, she was wising up by having her home in San Jose, California insulated with hemp fiber insulation from Kentucky. “It’s fire resistant,” she said. “And it breathes!”
And so, looking back to all its uses, and forward to all its potential, we simply must ask:
Leave a comment below: Can we build long-lasting hemp homes?
