A few years back I received a call for help from a melon farmer down in Arkansas.
“Michael,” he said, “I grow the best melons in the state. Everybody says so! But I can’t make any money growing those melons. What can I do make some money?”
“Well sir,” I replied, “how do you sell your melons?”
After a brief pause, he replied, “Well, during the harvest season a wholesaler comes by with his big truck every week or so and loads up my ripe melons with all the rest of the melons he picks up on his route.”
I then replied, “Why do you bother growing the best melons in the state if you are going to sell those melons in the same bin with what may well be the worst melons in the state?”
“If you want to make money selling the best melons, you’ll have to find a way to convince people with money that your melons are worth more of their money than the worst melons.”
When the World Trade Organization deemed America’s Mandatory Country of Origin labeling for meat and poultry products to be inconsistent with free trade standards, American farmers and ranchers lost their ability to convince people with money that the best American beef and poultry products were worth more money than the worst beef and poultry products the world has to offer.
