Autism Antidote
Can what we don’t eat be the antidote to autism?
Guest: Katherine Reid, PhD
Mother, Biochemist and Executive Director of UnBlindMyMind
Brooke was diagnosed with autism at the age of three.
She was a child in her own world, with no eye contact with her mother, father or siblings. There was no interacting with others. No bonding. No playing with other children. Typical experiences that brought joy to the faces of other children brought nothing to Brooke. Her entire play consisted of arranging her toy animals in a repetitive, obsessive, particular way.
For her parents, though, Brooks most disturbing behavior was her becoming trapped in yes/no loops. “Yes! I want this blanket on my bed… No! I don’t want this blanket on my bed.” The loops would run for hours, with Brooke crying her way through until she collapsed in exhaustion.
Fortunately, Brooke had what few other children with autism have – a mother with a PhD in biochemistry and a will to fight for her daughter’s well-being.
Dr. Katherine Reid fought the good fight against her daughter’s autism, and won. What she learned in along the way leads us to ask…
