Teach Your Children Well – 4-H
Should children be allowed to work on the farms of family and friends?
Guest: Kiera Butler – Author, Raise: What 4-H Teaches 7 Million Kids
Friend John, who manages the local county fair, told the following story that is, very sadly, illustrative of our times.
Before the county fair opened for its annual event, John brought a passel of young lads from the local youth authority out to clean up and prepare the grounds opening day festivities.
The lads happily volunteered to work because it gave them a chance, a temporary chance, to escape the confines of their correctional facility.
As the fair was to start in a few short days, John gave the youth their instructions, turned them loose to their chores, then went about his many management tasks. But after awhile, John looked up from his tasks and realized the lads had disappeared. Concerned, he went looking and soon saw them all gathered around a corral at the 4-H barn.
Thinking something amiss, John hurried up to the barn to see the cause of the gathering. What he found was that his miscreant lads were watching in wide-eyed wonder as a young 4-H lass milked her cow.
Obvious to John from the wonder in the eyes of the lads was the fact they were, for perhaps the first time, learning about the source of their milk!
John’s story leads us to ask…
