The label lies, and it does so with the blessings of the United States Department of Agriculture and the World Trade Organization.
Though the label on the package of hamburger might say, “Product of the USA,” the hamburger contained in the package might have come from a number of different animals, from a number of different ranches, from a number of different countries.
Several years ago, New Mexico cattle rancher Michael Lucero and consumer Robin Thorton took exception to this quirky labelling, and filed a lawsuit in federal court in New Mexico alleging the nation’s Big Four beef packers, which control 80 percent of the nation’s beef, had violated the state’s Unfair Practices Act.
But the federal court dismissed the lawsuit on grounds that the Federal Meat Inspection Act, which is administered by USDA, preempts any state law that attempts to require labels or advertisements that are different than those approved by the USDA. In other words, the court says that the feds are in control of what we may know about the food we eat.
But there are those among us who want the take some of the control of food from the bullying of government and industry, and place it back into the hands of local farmers and consumers. Today we are going to meet one of those people, and we’ll ask: How can we regain control of our food?
Leave a comment below: Do you think the Federal Government will us to regain control of our food?
