Michael Olson Food Chain Radio – Urban Farming Food, Jobs and Hope in the City
It was a perfect storm of bad food news about our young!
First was a BBC video entitled, “The Lost Streets of Chicago.” Search and watch, but only if you want to learn about the hopelessness of being young, with a gun, on the streets of Chicago.
Second was a Chicago Tribune article entitled, “Why Food Stamp Fraud is ‘Fairly Rampant’ at Corner Stores in Some Chicago Neighborhoods.” Search and read, but only if you want to learn how 174 corner grocers were booted out of the federal food stamp program, leaving 174 neighborhoods without a grocer.
Third was a research report from the Urban Institute entitled, “Impossible Choices: Teens and Food Insecurity in America.” Search and read, if you want to learn how so many of America’s young live with limited options that leave them with impossible choices.
And so we must ask…is there hope for our urban youth?
