Taking Dominion Over Animals
Guest: Dr. Temple Grandin Author, Working With Farm Animals
I learned to move cattle from Montana cowboys, some of which were well practiced in the ways of the wild, wild West!
“Heeeyahhh!” They’d yell at the cattle. “Heeeyahh… Hup, hup.” And to emphasize who was boss, they’d whack the reluctant on the butt with their coiled ropes.
Of course, not all the cattle liked the way in which dominion was being taken over them, and some would slip away to hide in the brush, and force the cowboys to chase them about the brush, all the while cursing in the most forceful of cowboy manners.
I never thought much about that wild-west way of moving cattle. How else do you move a reluctant critter that weighs well over a half-ton?
But then along comes Dr Temple Grandin, who says, “Stop yelling! If you start thinking like an animal, instead of a human, you will be able to move cattle with a whispered, “Shish… shish… shish!”
Temple Grandin leads us to ask…
Leave a comment below: Can humans work animals more humanely by thinking like animals?
