Can taste tell good food from bad?

Fats are bad. Fats are good. Grains are good. Grains are bad. Eggs are bad. Eggs are good.
It seems nothing flies faster than a food fad, because everybody knows exactly what everybody else should eat; and everybody talks, and everybody listens. So round and round we go: Fats are good. Fats are bad. Grains are bad. Grains are good. Eggs are good. Eggs are bad.
But wait! How did we survive all our millennia of eating whatever we could scrounge from nature without everybody telling everybody else what they should eat?
Could it be that our God-given, evolution-tuned sense of taste somehow allowed us to safely eat our way through thousands of years rotting meat, moldy grains and squirming grubs? That question leads us to this…
