Michael Olson Food Chain Radio – Save The Bees
They say that Apis mellifera, the western honeybee is responsible for one out of every three bites of food we eat.
However, according to the annual U.S. Beekeeping Survey published by Auburn University, 55.6% of managed honey bee colonies in the country were lost between April 2024 and April 2025.
Also according to that survey, U.S. beekeepers experienced record-high losses for the 2024-2025 season for the second year in a row, and that this loss was the highest on record.
The obstacles honeybees, and their keepers, must overcome to survive and provide us with those one-in-three bites of food include: harsh winters, varroa mites, bacteria and virus pathogens, poor nutrition, extensive travel, toxic chemicals and competition from unscrupulous merchants of adulterated or fraudulent honey.Given all that must be overcome to eat those one-in-three bites we ask: Is there a strategy to save the honey bee and bee keepers?
Leave a comment below: Do you eat fraudulent honey? Would you pay more for honey that is guaranteed to be honey?
