How can we recover from our Opioid Epidemic?
A nation with five percent of the world’s population now consumes 80% of the world’s opioids, and watches as 60,000 of its citizens are killed by this opioid epidemic each year.
In the previous edition of Food Chain Radio (#1138), author Bradley DeHaven told a very personal story of his son’s addiction to opioids, and how that addiction drew the family into the world of opioids and opiates.
In seeking to learn as much as he could about addiction, and opiates and opioids, DeHaven interviewed over 400 people whose lives had been turned upside down and inside out while living in Opioid Nation.
One man’s story was indicative of the extent to which addiction has come to govern Opioid Nation. Mr. X’s addiction had progressed to the extent no doctor would prescribe him anymore opioid painkillers. He was tapped out!
But his addiction was such that it would not allow him to be tapped out, and so one day he called the ambulance, saying that he had a severe accident out in the garage, and to please come get him.
He then went out into the garage and pulled a heavy workbench over onto his leg, breaking his femur and causing it to break through his skin of his leg. He then got more opioids.
When asked how to help someone recover from opioid and opiate addiction, Bradley DeHaven said, “Get professional help!”
And so we are going to professional help with the question…
