Neanderthal Vs Homo Sapien
Guests: Professor Pat Shipman Author, The Invaders
How did we beat the Neanderthal to the food?
50,000 years ago, we Homo Sapiens invaded the Eurasian homeland of the Neanderthal, thus precipitating a food fight for the ages.
We won the food, and the Neanderthal faded into fossil.
Today we have the means to look back to this incredible time with a remarkable degree of accuracy. We can look at fossilized bones and know from which species the bones came, and for what purposes the bones were used. We can date materials made of carbon, and thus establish an accurate time line for when life was lived. And we can sequence genes and know what ate what.
Given these remarkable skills, we can look back to the way we were 50,000 years ago and see ourselves involved in a fight for survival against the Neanderthal who were– like very distant relatives– of the same genus, but of a different species.
As we look back, and see how we hunted, and what we ate, we simply must ask…
Leave a comment below: How did we beat the Neanderthal to food and the future?
