Eating NAFTA
Guest: Alyshia Galvez, Author, Eating NAFTA: Trade, Food Policies, and the Destruction of Mexico
What did NAFTA do to the food we eat on both sides of the border?
The Trump administration has renegotiated the North America Free Trade Agreement with Mexico, and claims the new agreement will be a win-win for both countries.
As with all trade agreements, NAFTA was good for some, not so good for others…
For those who industrialized processes, like the manufacturing of vehicles and refrigerators, or the growing, processing and distribution of food, NAFTA brought high paying jobs to Mexico and cheap goods to the U.S. And that was a good deal for those on both sides of the border.
And yet something very unfortunate is happening to those on both sides of the border who are forced to eat the foods of NAFTA. They are coming down with non communicable diseases that are draining them of their resources, and even their lives.
And so today we pause to ask…

A good deal is good paying jobs for Mexico, and cheap goods to US?
I would think their would be a time of adjustment, a learning curve for new law.
If all are coming down with illnesses because of food, that sounds very vague. I guess only the US got sick before this?
