Can local distillers successfully compete in a marketplace dominated by multinational distillers?
While looking for a new taste among the selection of distilled spirits offered by the big box store recently, I saw something new– a local brand sporting the name Venus Spirits!
As I considered what tastes might be afforded in the bottle, the store’s adult beverage manager approached and, with great enthusiasm, said, “If you try it, you’ll like it!”
I tried it, and I liked it.
The liquor industry, like most industries, is growing in two directions, very big and very small. Two giant multinational corporations now control 80% of beer sales in the United States, and yet microbreweries are popping up like mushrooms after a spring rain in every town across the land.
In my community’s giant box store, almost all of the distilled spirit brands being sold are owned by a few giant multinationals. Still, it was the local brand being proudly touted by the store’s adult beverage manager.
That bottle of local liquor competing with brand after brand of multinational liquors leads us to ask…
