Invasion of Invasive Species
Guest: Heath Packard, Director of Communications Island Conservation
It is now a small world in which everyone is free to go most anywhere. And when they do go, they often take with them species of life alien to the environment in which they are being introduced.
The elemental characteristic of the alien invaders is that they have no competition in their new environments. With nothing there to see them as breakfast, invasive species grow unmolested and quickly outperform native species, which some do see as breakfast.
And the more everyone gets around, the more invasive species get around. Said McGill University Professor Anthony Ricciardi, “Environmental , biotechonological, and sociopolitical trends are transforming risks of invasion worldwide.”
This invasion of the invasive species leads us to ask:
What makes a species an invasive species?
How do invasive species invade and conquer?
By what means can invasive species be eliminated?
Leave a comment below: Should invasive species be eliminated?
