GMO Labeling and Finding the Hidden GMOs
Guest: Emily Moose, Communications Director A Greener World
The scientific consensus is that foods that have been modified by the re-engineering of their genes are safe to eat.
But an estimated 85% of the people who eat food do not believe in the safety of those genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, and wanted them to be labeled.
So three years ago, the federal government passed a law requiring the GMOs to be identified as “Bioengineered,” and to be labeled as such with a symbol of sorts, or a QR code that may be read with smart phones, by those smart enough to read them.
Today, an estimated 75% of the foods on the supermarket shelves are made with ingredients derived from crops that have been genetically modified. And according to the government’s regulations, items that contain highly refined ingredients don’t have to be labeled.
Additionally, to require a label, a food product needs to have at least 5% bioengineered material, which is a higher concentration than most other countries that have GMO labels.
All those new government labeling regulations that some say are designed to help us see what’s in our food, but which others say are designed to hide what’s in our food, will soon be put into effect, and on our food. And that leads us to ask…
