THE FOOD IGNORANCE COVENANT
Should we learn the stories of our food?

When we lived on or close to the land, we knew the stories about the foods we ate. We knew what those foods ate; how they lived their days; and how they gave up their lives so we could eat. Then we moved into town!
As city-dwelling people, we now live an average of 1,500 miles from the foods we eat, and have agreed, in essence, with those who grow, process, package, and ship the foods, not to know the stories about those foods. Instead, we rely on those who sell us foods to tell us what we should eat, and why.
There is, of course, significant benefits to be derived from having others feed us. Chief among them is the fact that we no longer have to spend a lot of time feeding ourselves, and can redirect our time to more fruitful endeavors, like watching television, surfing the internet, and texting friends.
However, in depriving ourselves of an intimacy with food, we also deprive ourselves with our most intimate connection to the natural world. This loss of intimacy with the natural world, and life itself, leads us to ask…
