Food Fraud
Guest: Larry Olmsted Author: Real Food Fake Food
While pedaling a bicycle about Japan, I would often stop at small village restaurants for a meal.
Though I could not read or write Japanese, I could simply point to the display case containing ceramic renditions of the foods the restaurant served for the item I thought might taste good.
Though the ceramic displays were most definitely fake food, they were not intended to mislead, and therefore not really food fraud.
Another of my culinary adventures in Japan occurred when served Kobe beef at a dinner party. Having been raised on range-fed Montana beef and wild game, I immediately recognized the Kobe’s melt-in-your-mouth taste and texture to be truly special.
Though that dinner party took place many years ago, I still remember the Kobe’s taste sensation and have often tried to find it here in the states. Though I can often find Kobe name on the menu, I have not found the Kobe taste anywhere.
And that leads me to ask…

Taste? Of course, food was meant to be enjoyed and taste is the joy of eating. It is one of life’s pleasure. A most wondrous gift from God. However, taste is not the real issue here. It’s the quality and nutrition of food that is life-sustaining, is it not? A body does not thrive nor live on taste. We can’t continue to eat chemicals/poisons just because another chemical–artificial flavorings and colors are added to make it taste good. It is just a matter of time till this will be a disastrous end to human health. Perhaps we already are at the beginning of our demise. Focusing on taste is still another example of our selfish, feel-good, anything-goes society. We need to think of the bigger issue here when making our food choices.
I bought a jar of parmesan grated cheese that later turns out came on a list that it contained added grated white plastic. Anyway, I threw it out and use the jar to add my own grated by hand cheese. The brand was expensive and premium so disappointed. I could not believe it for paid extra thinking that the higher price would give more quality assurance. A friend was the one that sent me the consumer warning link about the few brands suspect in adding artificial non-real food passing as if it was 100% real ingredients. So, buyers beware.
