It is not easy to practice slight-of-hand trickery with fire, and so the demonstration I saw before me captured and held my attention.
The object at hand was one of those thin cardboard Fed Ex mailers – the kind you send a next day check in.
The mailer had been sprayed with a material that, I was told, would prevent the mailer from catching fire.
When a blue-hot flame from a blow torch was focused on the mailer, a big puff of angry black smoke shot up from where the flame had been applied, but the mailer did not catch fire!
I was then invited to touch the spot on the mailer where the flame had been focused, and amazingly found it to be cool to the touch.
This demonstration, and others like it, forced a skeptical me to ask:
