Having hosted nearly 1400 long-form programs about food and agriculture, I long-ago came to the conclusion that certain things hold true. So, with literary license in hand, I bundled them into Michael Olson’s Three Laws of the Food Chain.
Here is the Third Law: Cheap Food Isn’t!
Of course, this law runs contrary to all we city people have been told about the great promise of industrial agriculture, which goes something like this: “You should be grateful because you have cheap food to eat.”
But what I have observed over the years is that food is made cheap by diminishing its nutrient content and by subsidizing its true cost of production. Thus, the cheap food we are promised is really the expensive food we are delivered. Note: This law, like my other two laws, welcome all challenges to their authenticity.
If the Third Law of the Food Chain is valid, we simply must ask:
