I was once commissioned by an environmental organization to identify a farm crop that would bring people back to the agricultural lands above Paphos, Cyprus.
The Cypriots had abandoned the land to work in the casinos that were sprouting up like mushrooms along the Meditteranean coast. I was in from California to come up with some ideas. The land in question was situated high above the legendary birthplace of the legendary Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. As we traveled by car through the district I marveled at the how the farms were situated with respect to the environment. The land itself was tilted perfectly so as to capture the maximum amount of sunlight bouncing off the blue waters of the Meditteranean.
Plants growing on those lands had to be engineered so as to be capable of processing that powerfully focused solar energy. Sure enough! When we stepped out of the air-conditioned car, the fragrance of wild herbs simply overwhelmed the senses.
‘There is the crop!’ I thought. “But what could one do to the crop to make it valuable enough to bring people back to the land?”
Topics for this Food Chain Radio show include why Fortin and Delmar employ biodynamic technologies to grow a hundred varieties of medicinal herbs; how their medicinal herbs are converted into lotions and potions; and how notions are used to sell their medicinal preparations directly to customers at farmers markets.
Today I sit with the perfect people to ask:

#1 Agriculture is the foundation upon which we build all our sand castles.
#2 The farther we go from the source of our food, the less control we have over what’s in that food.
