When Russia invaded the Ukraine, a coalition of the world’s governments stood up and said, “No!” And they used sanctions to enforce their “No!”
Enforcing those sanctions on Russia, however, comes at a cost to the sanctioning nations.
Russia and Ukraine are often called the “breadbasket of the world,” as the two nations combined produce nearly a third of the world’s wheat and barley. Ukraine is also a major supplier of corn and a global leader in sunflower oil, and Russia is also a major source of the world’s fertilizer.
During a recent press conference at a NATO summit in Brussels, U.S. President Joe Biden said, “”The price of the sanctions is not just imposed upon Russia. It’s imposed upon an awful lot of countries as well.” The President then said that a food shortage is in the near future for the U.S., and “it’s gonna be real!”
This food shortage will be felt most sharply by those who live paycheck to paycheck and struggle to buy enough food for their families. Food supply chain expert Dan Varroney told Fox Business, “The shortage comes at an absolutely horrible time for American consumers because we’re already looking every day at inflation almost reaching 10%. And that means that consumers, including those that are living paycheck to paycheck, are going to pay more for food.”
Given what we are being told by those in the know, and what we are seeing for ourselves whenever we go to buy food, we know that a “it’s gonna be real” food shortage is already baked in the cake. And so we ask…
Leave a comment below: Who will serve the hungry during the “it’s gonna be real” food shortage?
Michael Olson’s Three Laws of the Food Chain
#1 Agriculture is the foundation upon which we build all our sand castles.
#2 The farther we go from the source of our food, the less control we have over what’s in that food.

Hello,
I’m a reporter in Hollister, CA with the online news organization BenitoLink. I listened to your podcast with Linda Lampe with interest because I know her very well and have written stories about her helping the homeless at My Father’s House. Because of your interview with her I am writing another one about her serving those in need of food. I would like to include comments from you about the food situation from your perspective and why you decided to interview Linda. I would appreciate a few minutes of your time for a phone interview, if possible.
Regards,
John Chadwell
