Who will feed us if they shut down the internet?
April 2009. I was there and remember it well.
They attacks cut the underground fiber optic cables that form the superhighway of the physical internet in four different locations, knocking out landlines, cell phones and internet service in four San Francisco Bay Area counties.
Ladies and gentlemen, you could not buy a bottle of water, a gallon of gas or a cheeseburger in my county, nor could you make a phone call, nor log on the internet. The situation was so debilitating the person responsible for the county’s Emergency Services had to get in her car and drive down to our radio station to tell the community how everything we had come to take for granted had been terminated.
She could not tell us why, nor by whom.
The FBI is now investigating 11 deliberate attacks throughout the San Francisco Bay Area on the physical infrastructure of the internet over the past year. The FBI is also investigating a 2014 incident in which a California electric utility’s substation was shot down by AK-47 gunmen.
If the FBI knows who is conducting the attacks, or why, it is not saying.
What the FBI does know is the attacks are probing in nature, as if the perpetrators are testing capabilities, response times and consequences.
Given the totality of devastation in capabilities my county experienced, and the continuing attacks on the internet’s infrastructure, we simply must pause to ask…
